Where We Come From and Where We’re Going
Trailmark began as a rights and title research consultancy over 13 years ago, formed in response to a clear need: to better document and apply Indigenous knowledge in environmental decisions, consultation processes, land claims, and environmental impact assessments affecting Aboriginal rights and title.
We strengthened our community-based research methods by drawing on participatory approaches and the interpretive depth of ethnography. These practices helped ensure that Indigenous knowledge could be documented and used with meaning and care.
This work also revealed a gap: no technology existed to support this kind of qualitative and spatial research, and in a way that communities could fully control and use easily. So we built one.
Trailmark software grew directly from this need. It exists to support Indigenous-led research, mapping, and governance—and to ensure that knowledge remains protected, visible, and under community control. For us, data sovereignty isn’t just a technical matter; it’s central to self-determination and long-term stewardship of land and waters.
Over the past decade, Trailmark’s user base has grown steadily, with over 50 Indigenous communities across Canada adopting the platform to support their land and water stewardship and rights and title. Every feature has been shaped by a decade of real-world use—refined through face-to-face feedback, field testing, and collaboration with the people who rely on it. Trailmark continues to adapt alongside the communities it serves.
As environmental, legal, and policy contexts shift, we remain committed to walking alongside communities—with humility, precision, and a deep respect for the knowledge systems that continue to care for this land. Because every thing is connected to everything else.
