Mapping and GIS for Stewardship

Highly accurate and easy to understand maps and spatial datasets.
Mapping is a powerful tool for stewardship when it does more than visualize data. We support communities in developing GIS and mapping systems that organize spatial information clearly, responsibly, and in ways that support real decisions about land and water.

Our approach combines technical GIS expertise with a deep understanding of how spatial information is used in stewardship, planning, monitoring, rights and title, and regulatory contexts. We focus on creating maps and spatial datasets that are accurate, interpretable, and durable—so they can be reused across projects and over time.

Our mapping and GIS support can include:
  • designing and managing GIS data models and spatial reporting
  • producing clear, decision-ready maps for internal planning or external processes
  • developing secure, shareable interactive web maps where appropriate
  • integrating mapping into broader stewardship, monitoring, and governance workflows
We also have specialized experience in historical GIS, including:
  • digitizing and georeferencing historical maps, and
  • translating spatial information embedded in textual and archival records into mapped form.

This work can surface new insights by placing historical and contemporary information into a shared spatial context—helping communities see patterns, continuity, and change across time and territory.

Mapping and GIS work is often supported by Trailmark software, which allows spatial data to be securely connected with interviews, documents, monitoring records, and other forms of knowledge in one place.
