Environmental Monitoring and Guardians Programs
Across Canada, Indigenous communities are reclaiming authority over monitoring and caring for their lands, waters, and resources. Guardians and community-based monitoring programs play a critical role in this work—but funding alone does not guarantee success. Program design, implementation, and long-term usability are often the greatest challenges.
We support communities in establishing and strengthening Guardians and community-based monitoring programs that are purposeful, sustainable, and grounded in community priorities. Our role is to help design programs that gather the right information, support on-the-land presence, and produce knowledge that can be used in stewardship, planning, and decision-making.
Our support can include:
- designing monitoring programs aligned with community goals and governance needs
- supporting funding applications and project scoping where requested
- developing field-ready workflows and data collection approaches
- establishing data management and reporting systems that keep information usable and protected
- helping communities turn monitoring results into clear, decision-ready outputs
We have worked with Indigenous communities across northern and southern Canada for more than a decade to establish, manage, and expand community-led monitoring and Guardians programs. Our experience spans early program design through to long-term implementation and growth.
This work can be supported by Trailmark software, including mobile tools developed through years of collaboration with Indigenous monitors and stewardship staff. These tools are designed to support field data collection and secure information management as part of broader monitoring systems.
